Clip of the day: Back and forth. Always here.

I have a soft spot for him....he is fun, generous, a good friend, smart and he works hard. We used to seat next to each other at the Brompton Brands office, and quoting our ex-boss: "you two together are worse than 2 little kids in school....if you didn't get your work done I would probably never agreed to that seating plan..." All true. Also true: that I became an admirer of his work ethics and how well he has done for himself. Needless to say we went our separate ways, I launched CONNECT and Jonny Boud...well, he created the popular 'Love Brunch' concept, represented Absolut in London, promoted the Rose club, developed "Young Thread" fashion label (which I became a great fan) and most recently opened Ping, (and he is making sure that all of the above are still happening).

This is the thing about a real connection: it doesn't matter which course of the road we decide to take, when you understand each other's universe, like the same things, and respect the very fact that we all have individual paths - that is the glue that holds a friendship together. Evidently Im not 'clipping' about my friendship to Jonny, but I AM inviting my London friends to the ultimate ping-pong dinning experience and towns latest venue PING, where you can have traditional Italian pizzas, bruschettas, move to the bar with its extensive cocktail collection from mixologist Cris Cwiek (previously at Bungalow 8) and of course: play Ping Pong with your friends. Since I'm in New York, geography is keeping me away from enjoying all of it but thats life....like the game itself: back and forth and whichever way, always here.  Well done Jonny, proud of you xxx

Have you found what you are looking for?

For most of my experience, I seem to discover new places, which end up being very special to me - the same way I connect with people: accidentally meant to be, at the right time precisely but the wrong moment and when I am not looking. So my question is: Do we really find what we are looking for? Or should we look for it to be found?

Whichever the case, the world does work in mysterious ways... but still, I can guarantee you that 9 out of 10 people will tell you that their favourite restaurant was found by chance on a hidden corner during a carefree stroll. (and that happens for the world's most known love stories to man kind and successful business ideas we hear about it). So my point is as much as I had promised for CLIP of the day to be - everyday - I would be lying to you if I had come here to write an article about something new, given CONNECT's latest happenings....

The same way you can't learn to have charisma or buy connections, you can't force spontaneity; you either have it or you don't. But ultimately that in it self can be the difference, and I have always been a strong believer that force should  never be imposed but rather always achieved. But I must confess that I have 'forced' myself to come here everyday since the 17th of June, I have continuously forced my self to write and failed. Everytime. Not because I fell out of it, but simply because my heart wasn't here. And that is most probably and the most logical explanation why we only have 1 heart, and why it will never truly function in two places at the same time. You cannot do everything at once. (Not if you truly put all of your heart on it). So like everything else in life, I made a choice and gave you nothing.  Absolutely nothing for ....days. No hint, no apologies or new CLIPS. And if for every choice a consequence, I must now reveal that I couldn't be happier with mine. It is with great joy that I can confirm that CONNECT has officially and successfully joined forces with two new international identities and is preparing  for the launch of a bigger and better new website by the begging of September 2012. That alone has taking more than my regular extra time since March and clearly a lot more of my body and mind, heart and soul lately...and it will continue to until early September. But these are very exciting times for all CONNECT members and the new ones to come....!

So with that being said, I thought I would lock today's CLIP of the day with a few suggestions for the summer straight from CONNECT members, fashion features editors, restauranteurs and  the coolest entrepreneurs....:

1 -This season's sunglasses hot picks - Westward Leaning &  Oliver Peoples

2 -London's new Greek spot - Mazi Restaurant

3 -Saint-Tropez's latest hotel found - White 1921

4- New York's inexpensive opening  The Pod Hotel

5 -Brazil's promessing musical talent - Rodrigo Lampreia & Samba Santa Clara Project

Well, wherever you are, I hope what you are looking for,  finds you. xx

CLIP OF THE DAY: Meu amado Brasil.

There are good days and today is one of them. Yup, I get to CLIP about something close to my heart: Brazil and the Back 2 Black project, now for the first time ever in London. Launched in Rio de Janeiro 2009, the annual Back2Black festival is one of the most cutting edge cultural events in Brazil attracting over 50,000 visitors so far and a pioneer in promoting global appreciation for black culture in Brazil. I was lucky enough to go to previous editions which took place at Leopoldina railway station close to hip downtown Rio de Janeiro - so aiming to recreate a similar setting, the London festival will be held at Old Billingsgate in the heart of East London, co-produced by the Barbican, with four different stages and an extensive offering of concerts, debates and exhibitions. So you are in the know,  the eclectic line-up will feature more than 30 Brazilian, UK and international artists, groups, thinkers and leaders, including host Gilberto Gil, performances by Macy Gray, Marcelo D2, Mart'nalia, Roots Manuva, Amadou & Miriam amongst others. This year Back2Black festival features a strong emphasis on UK African connections and communities including Afro-Caribbean artists and brings together a heady mix of different traditions and musical genres, including Samba, Jazz, Funk, R’n’B, Blues, Rock, Reggae, Dub and Hip Hop – all of which have been inspired by Africa. Thanks to CONNECT I have received my invitation for Sunday line up (I'm telling you its a good day). So if you are a member log in into your account to secure yours; or alternatively you can buy tickets online at the Barbican website. Here is a little scoop to help you get in the mood:

Gilberto Gil - Aquele abraco

Mart'nalia - Boto meu povo na rua

Marcelo D2 - Desabafo

Amadou & Miriam - Senegal Fast Food

Macy Gray - Sweet Baby

Because everything in life is better with music... See you there xx I.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Trend hunting

"It is not a coffee shop it is not an office, but if you are a mobile worker it is something much better than both things together". That is the approach at Urban Station in Bueno’s Aires hip Palermo Soho disctric. Think desks, Wi-Fi, scanners, lockers, conference rooms that feel like a trendy work space and the comfort of your favourite coffee shop combined. How do they make money? (aside from food and drinks) by renting desks. There has been a real and significant growing market for this sort of business, specially if you consider that around 26 million people work at least some of the time outside a proper office space (not to mention freelancers and part-timers). So today, I thought I would CLIP about this to you, as on a similar note, I have recently been invited to the opening of London’s first members only office/private boutique club for the creative industry called Apartment 58 in Soho. Soon to open in Notting Hill and Shoreditch areas, and later on in Paris, Berlin, Milan, New York and Mumbai, the place is indeed really cool and worth checking, if you can. If not, think CONNECT & watch out…..I. xx

CLIP OF THE DAY: Peep show

Connect  friend and  the owner of New York's hot spot La Esquina restaurant, Serge Becker just opened his latest venue and London's first adventure, so its no wonder  that that particular news alone made the cut on my connect diary last Tuesday night. In this case, with  the 'serious' loving and uplifting kind of crowd (because when you book a table at a trendy place and one that will make you blush when giving directions to any proper British cab driver) you really want to be with your gang) Yes, La Bodega Negra is situated in the heart of busy Soho neighbourhood, at a Sex shop entrance to be more precise.....its loud, fun, and the food is spicy but great. (Well it is Mexican after all) If you are in town, make a move. My Clip? Sesame tostadas with guacamole, octopus el negro and seafood cazuela. Enjoy. (I did). xxx I.  PS. Gracias Cley Cley La belle & Mr. K Van Leewen for organizing such a fun night!

CLIP OF THE DAY: The Rise and Fall

Hi Clippers, a little bird told me you were feeling abandoned..... so today, I've made some room to talk about the rise and fall - and everything else that is in between. As always, I can only write as far as my own meandering experience goes....and in my case, a fall when it happens every  so often makes you realise how tall you thought you were standing, and it normally takes place when we  need to know to learn how to earn perspective. Nobody likes "the fall",  quite reasonably enough; but without "it", very rarely do we really know where we stand. This is what I also learned about "the fall" - it comes in disguised, and most of the times we deeply resent it. Because the true ones, come  unannounced, they are extremely unfriendly, and have the ability to suck at timing. - yes - I never recalled having  a fall in my life and thinking "Oh wow, this is a great moment for everything to collapse". (have you)? So why do we need to connect with "the fall" after all? Because "it" is what allows the other side of the "rise" to stand still, to make sense, and exist. The so-called: - in between - where everything else that matters really lies. So no - its not "the rise" that defines us either. It really isn't. What have I learned about the rise? That you need to dis-connect yourself from everyone else, from all your falls and flaws; count your blessings to find out what you are looking for and walk towards your passion (yours; not your neighbours, not what you think people think they think about you). And when you walk the line, take your hard work and gut with you, everything else is unnecessary and will most likely hold you back. Ok, now, fair enough, if by my accounts, press load and recent results you consider someone like me living "the rise" at the moment,  but make no mistake: we never really live on it, because the very moment it strikes us, its the very moment its gone. So I guess what I really want to do is rise you and thank you Clippers. For being so kind to read and share CLIP of the day with me over the months that have gone by, (even when its not every day)! to made it to newspaper colums and for 'rising' the every day traffic on my webiste - (today we reached 65.000 visits) but most importantly for representing what matters the most: everything else that is in between the rise and fall.
Let me tell you who is also on the rise: Rose Klabin - my good friend from Rio, CONNECT art ambassador and her first time exhibition in the UK - at the Wilmotte Gallery.
She is known for her political mind and her brilliant ability to understand, analyse, and reinterpret our own corporate culture. That and for making us think (!!) - so we salute you for that Rose - Tomorrow is her big British debut and one where Rose will show how she uses photography in an innovative way, integrating the subject matter into the production of the artwork by overlapping media. So you have a grasp of what  Rose's work is all about: her first series Corporate Identity saw her spending two weeks at a paper factory in the south of Brazil (her own heritage, as her family holds the biggest paper business in the country).  Rose captured images of the machines at work in the jungle, using raking angles to highlight the vast industrial structures in the forest. She then photographed the reforestation reserves around the factory and superimposed these over the original images; the results are then printed on paper produced at the factory.
Rose is always "looking directly at corporate responsibility, man versus nature and sustainability" specially now as Brazil emerges as a powerful economic force, so needless to say I  absolutely adore her work....Her most recent series Rise and Fall  will be show cased tomorrow - a the result of an extensive road trip through the south of the USA. Rose documented the impact of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, compiling over 5000 images of abandoned homes. Back in Brazil she documented the other side of the coin, focusing on the huge construction boom in Sao Paulo. Rise and Fall is the result of overlaying these conflicting realities to create a third, more abstract vision. The images are then printed on insular sheets, a material used in construction - (smart and complex thus simple and beautiful) - in the end pretty much, like the artist CONNECT and I happened to fall for... I guess we do need a 'fall' from time to time. xx

CLIP OF THE DAY: Food Lovers Only

Happy Monday Clippers! (yes yes I am well aware that my Clips haven't exactly made it to the 'every day' slogan mark...) but I will say in advance that these upcoming 2 weeks will be  very challenging work wise (a lot of good CONNECT news coming soon)...so bare with me! Now, on to something that is far from being difficult and rather one of the main reasons why living is so good in the first place: FOOD. So, if you are one of us....(the food lovers that is) than today's CLIP is definitely worth marking. Last week I was invited to Pret-A-Dinner at St James Palace N50, a quite breath-taking classic venue which has been totally revamped with crazy graffiti and contemporary art specially for the occasion. So you are in the now,  Pret-a-Dinner is an international  exquisite dinning experience concept in the format of "pop-up" dinner parties taking place in different cities worldwide such as New York, London, Berlin, Milan, Rio, Monaco...To celebrate its London opening a few and very privileged guests (think CONNECT) gathered to catch up with the latest in town over cocktails created by the maestro mixologist Tony Conigliaro from himself while enjoying the views of the  exhibition of contemporary Italian artists from Gazelli art house.

As per promised to all of the beloved true Clippers, I have taken my own shots,  on  your right hand side DETAIL: My beautiful friend Cleyenne holing her napkin - with each name stamped personally on a linen kitchen towel that served as napkin (original ideia for hosting a dinner party ourselves). Well, I have to say, that I personally really enjoyed it, and I just couldn't miss out clipping about it to you, as any of the above cities its probably where you are reading CLIP from....so look out for their dates and try a unique dinning experience night out with friends, family or your better half...CLIPPING: LONDON - 9th May -30th June. Go online and sign up (as its by invitation only) to make your reservation. For more pictures you can follow me on Instagram under ines4connect. Hope you can make it...! xx I.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Pool Party

In some cases Sunday nights are made of catching up on your laundry and cosing up to a movie on your sofa....others....Sunday night means time for another Pool Party at The Shoreditch House roof top....Well, this Sunday I was gladdly ticking option 'B'....! So if you are indeed a member, let me blog on to your memory and remind you of how great it is to just forget tabout all these pretentious restaurants and clubs  out threre and how refreshing it feels to just  walk around on your  jeans and black converse tennis shoes holding a beer and catching up with some of your favorite creative friends (who by the way wouldn't be caught dead on the above scenarios....).

MY CLIP....

Escaping (after some happy spinning on the dance floor) to the downstairs floor and hit on a different kind of pool.....YES, I am serious - and my softspot goes to cracking up with my friends playing foosball and pool. (BLISS)!

IF YOU ARE NOT A MEMBER

If you are not a SOHO HOUSE member, you can still try and book a room at their hotel or  head to their ubber cool and  super laid back Restaurant Pizza East for some oven made pizzas and italian's finest vino.  In any case, if you do, think about booking prior as its normally very busy. So, as per promissed, I made sure to click and clip it first hand so you are in the know for next time you are out on a sunday night or in town for a visit. CLIP OF THE DAY: Picasso takes Tate and... Ballet?

Hello Clippers! Hope you are all safe and sound back from all the fun at Carvanal in Rio and President day holidays in New York. Todays CLIP of the day is close to my heart: one of my favorite painters, my dance, and loved art space all in one: Picasso, Ballet and Tate Britain. Only a few days now to Europe's most anticipated exhibition - Picasso and Modern British Art. For the ones who don't know, in the summer of 1919 Picasso was busy in London sketching visionary costumes for the Ballets Russes premiere of the one and only Le Tricorne. How can you not love that...? This is the thing about very known people, just when you think you've learned everything possible there is to know about someone as spoken as Mr. Pablo P., it seems he still manages to surprise us. A never seen side of the Spanish genious and unique show at London's  epic artsy hall space which will be buzzing with life as English National Ballet animates Picasso and Modern British Art with ballet classes, workshops, rehearsals and performances, where you get to watch, sketch and even join in over the course of the week on a rare insight into how English National Ballet rehearses repertoires and creates commissions. Even if you don't share any of my 3 passions above, take a chance and let the unexpected inspire you; in the end it still lives where you least expect. Well done Pablo...! Gracias xx I.

CLIP OF THE DAY: The Ultimate Party Pad.

Last year this was my friend´s best kept secret: THE get away retreat and...ultimate party pad (the Connect kind, if you know what I mean). Château de la Goujeonnerie is the true definition of a flamboyant fairytale, featuring unicorn taxidermy and chandeliers, seven double rooms and three single, a heated outdoor pool only reached by strolling through a forest (evidently...)the property can be rented catered for 9.000 pounds; just in case if a weekend as a "mere" guest wont do. What else is worth knowing...? That La Goujeonnerie is run by the 3 men behind London's hip cocktail bar Loungelover and Les Trois Garcons restaurant which I absolutely recommend a paper CLIP on you travel journal and a visit upon the shortest notice. Michel Lasserre, Hassan Abdullah and Stefan Karlson may have started simply by selling and collecting antiques in Notting Hill but today, these are the characters in a fairy tale for grown-ups. And we sure all need one...Dream away clippers xx

CLIP OF THE DAY: Strike a pose.

Two years ago my family and I spent Easter all together in Paris and being the daughter of a Museologist graduate, my mother was sure to arrange for all of us to see Lucien Freud's opening show at the Pompidou Centre "Freud: L'Atelier"  that is, before we had even touched Parisisan ground. I must confess that, that particular afternoon stuck with me ever since... How grand is Freud? How much can a line on someone's face tell? How deep is an unknown, raw and talented brush? Can he truly mirror their soul when they strike a pose? You are about to find out...As part of the Cultural Olympian London festival for 2012, a never seen before Lucian Freud exhibition takes place at the National Portrait Gallery. (Starting in February). Bringing together a selection of his most famous works, covering seven decades of the world´s most celebrated and distinctive portraiture career of all painters. More than 100 works filling most of the ground floor gallery space, this is the first major show to focus on Freud's portrait work, and it had been planned in close partnership with the artist himself, who died aged 88 in July last year. London calling, I say. Happy Tuesday Clippers xx

CLIP OF THE DAY: Be my guest, really.

As most of you Clippers know, born a frequent flyer is part of the deal one it comes to being a true Connect member. A constant request on my inbox? "please connect me to someone who knows a cool and unexpensive place to stay in London, Ines". Evidently I wouldn't blog out my private contacts and the ultimate secrets on this one just like that (sorry troopers but privileges will be privileges) and only members will have access to them. But you also know me better by now, so today I will try to brigthen up your Tuesday and give you something for your paper clip to hold on to when your planning your next way over to London, basically a 'one fine stay': your chance to stay and live like a local. Get familiar with the word "unhotel", check their website for availability according to your dates, budget, prefered area and ...be my guest.

CLIP OF THE DAY: All I really want...

I will be honest...today I was going to blog about this new restaurant in Rome that I was told about, but all I really want to do is run to my favourite movie theatre - The Electric and watch my dear and talented connect beau Guy Ritchie's latest movie Sherlock Holmes: A game of Shadows at 9:15pm tonight - Since being a clipper is all about the moment, I thought I would be truthful to my own words...I guess my CLIP is simple: find a cinema room with a real soul to it, call that one person, feel no guilt when buying candy or popcorn and please do me a favour will you? Accidentally leave your phone at home. Happy Friday Clippers! xxx I.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Sister's Act

The word Muzungu means traveller in Swahili - but if you think about these two very special girls, "travelling" isn't something they do from time to time or on holidays - its who they are. If  you don't know them...well you should : Tatiana Santo Domingo and Dana Alikhani. Tatiana is my dear friend Julio's sister, from Brazilian-Colombian origin, born in New York and raised in Switzerland and Paris. Dania is Iranian, raised in Cyprus with a degree in social anthropology from SOAS in London and a Masters in Human rights from Columbia University in New York. Inspired by their own travels and (successful personal handpick of local souvenirs that they would bring to their family and friends) - that and an extremely sensible cultural awareness was reason enough for them to be determined to create an interactive portal that would bring together fair trade suppliers from all over the world ethically-sourced to all runway fashionistas out there. With a focus on "fine craftsmanship, natural materials and traditional techniques", now (and always) my Clip of the Day goes to Ethical fashion label Muzungu Sisters and my hats off to these two special Eco-fashion friendly Connect gals for their work enables communities to continue in their respective time-honoured traditions.

I'm particularly in love with a pair of riding boots with Moroccan-inspired embroidery... Good thing they have now launched online - through the social shopping site Motilo. I guess you know what I'm doing in about 5mins...  I.  xxx

CLIP-IT: Muzungu Sisters just opened their first ever shop: a pop-up store at Momo in London - which was celebrated last month with a party (attended by their longtime friend Margherita Missoni amongst others). MSisters will be running until Christmas, so make sure to swing by Momo's café for the eco pop-up of the season alongside its North African menu. - at 25 Heddon St W1 London.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Think outside the box

True - not everybody's business are going well, (specially at this point) I do get it and despite being happy as a clam with Connect I read what's been going on in the world... but - if there is something I am a true believer and great admirer are people who "think outside the box" (that and the ones who "take their pleasures seriously") as you all know by now... Well on that note, say hello to Boxpark the world’s very first pop-up mall made completely from shipping containers. (How clever is that)? Located in London and in the heart of cool Shoreditch area (next to the underground station) the mini shopping centre just opened their multiple unpretentious, trendy and eco-friendly doors this week. Needless to say that this has been the buzz of the town for this Christmas shopping. If you are in London walk on the pedestrian-friendly box world, because they are packed with popular stores (think Lacoste, Puma, etc) - this time all compact (taking up only 1 to 3 containers) and complete with a mix of international fashion, arts and lifestyle ‘box shops’, galleries and cafes... Happy Shopping!

A special thanks to my lovely friend Kabir Chibber for keeping me in the loop! - K. is not only a Connect member but also an extremely talented writer for the New York Times, BBC and the senior editor of Port Magazine my latest CLIP obsession.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Follow the Chef

Little challenge for my London friends: try getting a dinner table at Polpetto, the new Italian restaurant above the French House in Soho. You know what they say: "location, location, location" Polpetto's address?  Well, 'only': the dining room above the French House, one of the most remarkable bars in central Soho. The same owner of popular Polpo - that added to the fact that it only has 28 seats all together make it quite impossible to just walk-in and enjoy a meal. The place is rustic looking with nineteenth-century French light fittings and zinc-topped tables (very NYC West Village), serving small portions of dishes in the style of a Venetian bacaro (wine bar).  All comanded by beautiful chef and  it girl Florence Knight- who ensures that the 1.800 followers on Twitter are all in the loop with new dishes like the popular "sgroppino" or even the much antecipated  oppening of their 3rd venue Spuntino which word has gone around will be even smaller! Really: Think CONNECT.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Living and learning

Inspired by my mother I read "A tour around Heathrow airport" and soon after that I became a great admirer of author and philosopher Alain de Botton, founder of The School of Life. Situated in the heart of bohemian surroundings of Bloomsbury area in London, The School of Life describes itself as "the chemist for the mind, a place where you can try out a variety of cultural solutions to everyday ailments. We sell books, artworks, courses, holidays and therapeutic services." Yes - we are talking about courses on: "How to be a better friend", "How to stay calm", Why are relationships so complicated?" or "How to find a job you love" --- To many this probably sounds silly, others their biggest fear but maybe if we take prejudgement out of the equation this may be the ultimate bibliotheraphy service for your soul....

CLIP-IT: Check out their Meals Sessions calendar - fun dinners with unique guests, TSL Shop & the original gift certificates.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Upstairs at The Oak

As winter comes knocking on our door we are all gathering "upstairs at The Oak" for wine and tapas - our regular evening meeting point after work. The Oak in Notting Hill: famous restaurant turned into gastro-pub, always closely packed with cool locals on the ground floor that surrounded by candle lights, large wooden tables, high ceilings, chocolate-leather banquetes enjoy a wide choice of Mediterranean dishes and wood fired pizzas. The loungey upstairs bar is less busy and ideal to wait with a cocktail or in my case catch-up with friends during the week. Tonight find me seated on their  ridiculously confortable sofas sipping some on good vino and nibbling tapas: "upstairs at The Oak".

CLIP-IT: Check out Oak's cosy private room available for hire, perfect for birthday dinners or a larger get together soirée.
