CLIP OF THE DAY: What I get is what you see.

She is determined to redefine memories as we known them - daring and talented that is for sure - she is also hip and gracious and a friend; the kind you just easily welcome into your life because what you see is what you get. Although based in London, Mariana Mauricio just landed in Sao Paulo today... to present her first solo exhibition in Brazil. Her work is based on the use of photographs found in various forms, from her personal collection to old albums, Mariana explores shrouded emotions, and the everlasting possibilities of affective interaction of a memory that up until then wasn't even ours. (will it ever be)? I have soft spot for her pieces because after music, photography rules my universe... In this exhibition, Mariana gives a distinct tone to her reinterpretation process, since the works have the original photograph on which she intervenes. Mariana works around the concern of these people to register and legitimize every moment, by 'destroying' and re interpreting it at the point of being completely distorted and re-filled with her own affection. Quite interesting her studio is a chaotic space of memories "stolen" or rather 'borrowed', which now belongs to them only by their marks, and territory. Transcending every stage of the record imagery and breaking emotional layers makes you think what really truly belongs to you? A picture or a moment? Maybe not 'every thing you see' is what you get after all...but knowing that for every picture there is a million unique and (as valid as) interpretations, then I guess for every moment unparalleled existences too...

Wishing Mariana a great trip & all the success on another step of her career surely turned into a fond 'memory'. Check her work out from 19th June -21st July at Galeria Leme in Sao Paulo. I. xx

CLIP OF THE DAY: It's all make believe, isn't it?

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring". M. Monroe

As a tribute of the 50th Anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death in 2012, a unique exhibition featuring paintings, photographs and videos of the legend herself is debuting at the National Film Museum in Sao Paulo today. Marilyn Monroe as an icon seen through more than 120 works by over 50 artists who captured Marilyn's rise to stardom in styles ranging from fashion photography to Pop Art. "Quero ser Marilyn Monroe" celebrates the many  passionate, controversial and sheer sides the world's most famous blonde, with biographical glimpses into  Marilyn's private moments as well as more abstract interpretations of Marilyn. America's favorite sex symbol? Immortal legend? Ambitious woman? Innocent girl? Complicated or just flawless? Be the judge of that on your own terms....from the 4th March until April 1st.

I do apologize for missing Friday's CLIP of the Day (Thank you for the emails and suggestions, I do cherish them). On that note, and FYI, I will travelling again tomorrow...see I guess I will be seeing you on Tuesday, Clippers. Have a great Monday! xx I.

CLIP OF THE DAY: T-time

Do people really change....?

I'm not sure about that, but they certainly adapt. I know I have (in so many levels).
Take tea for example: I used to hate it as a kid, but after 8 years living in London I gave in....and today you will find me drinking it out of my free will. Now, for the people who know me personally, they most probably heard me telling the "tea story" (if so, I was either trying to impress you or bored....) Whatever the reason was, its because I've heard it myself a 1.000 times, thanks to my father who has no memory record what so ever and insisted on telling me this story as if it was the very first time.  Well, since a very early age in my life, I always felt this urge of "sharing is caring" and so I thought you should all know it too so in some way I could feel less idiotic. Time has gone by and today I have my own blog and accoding to stats over 400 viewers a day - (great opportunity to tell my "tea story").

Sorry Clippers, but here it goes: Tea was actually imported to Europe during the Portuguese expansion of the 16th century, at which time it was termed chá (and this is still how we say it in Portuguese). In 1750, tea experts traveled from China to the Azores Islands and planted tea, along with jasmines to give the tea aroma and distinction.  Portuguese Princess Catherine of Bragança, wife of Charles II, took the tea habit to Great Britain around 1660 and by the turn of the 19th century tea became as widely consumed as it is today in Britain and around the world.

My favorite part: Why everywhere else in the world (except China and Portugal) we call it Tea, Thé, etc...?? Because when tea was beeing imported to Europe, it was placed into big brown bags where a large letter "T" was stamped outside that stood for "Traffic". There you go, something to "CLIP" it in mind next time you are trying to pretend you are cultured on a date or bored at a cocktail party.

CLIP-IT: Brazil's first true and new Tea Gourmet Store, located in the bohemian district of Vila Madalena in Sao Paulo. This really cool tea room is the brainchild of local architects Alan Chu and Cristiano Kato, who transformed a small house into a concept store inspired by little tins of the 35 blends offered by “the gourmet tea”.  Also check out their website for all sorts of crazy tea utensils and trendy tea gifts.
