CLIP OF THE DAY: Lost with a view

Get lost but with a view...Lisbon's coolest winter terrace LOST In officially welcomes you to their Winter Jazz Session soiree tonight at 8:30pm. The usual Connect: LOST In an Indian boutique and snack-like restaurant whose owners are long-time friends, an oasis inside one of the hippest neighbourhoos: "Principe Real" along with the best view possible over the city (check their virtual tour). But all social link aside, I truly reccomend you to go there and see it for yourself, specially because we can all use some Shanti Shanti quality time in our lives. Good thing when you can do it while enjoying an exquisite and tasty wrap, toast or sanduich with an unique Indian flair to it. For rainy and cold days they have prepared a cosy Indian decorated interior room, with the same great view, candles, blankets & hidden cool mood.

CLIP-IT: Try the scrambled eggs with farinheira (Portuguese sausage), ham toast with cheese and onion jam and the Portobello mushrooms & drink lemonade.

CLIP OF THE DAY: King of Kitsch

Formerly a grocery store that sold spices from the Far East,  today Pavilhão Chines  Club is (and still remains) as one of one of the  "old school" most popular (almost hidden) bars loved by generations of true Lisboetas - Put it this way: This Saturday, I ran into my father while I was having a drink with my friends who were visiting from Belgium... and that is just another day...The owner’s  extraordinary personal collection of kitsch and junk (filling every available space) makes the exception to the rule that "less is more" and the venue looks more like a lively and vibrant flea market than a bar. From china teapots to antique mugs, model trains and literally thousands of miniature soldiers (my favorite), the collection is awe-inspiring and definitely worth the visit. While the bar serves all the classic wines and whiskies from the beautiful art deco menu book, I personally am addicted to their  collection of exotic teas, which makes it a great place to go to even if you are not in the mood for an alcoholic drink. If you arrive later in the evening and find that the doors are locked, no problemo - all you need to do is to ring the bell, and trust me you will be glad you did.

CLIP-IT: Ask for a table on the back room where you can play snooker, (even smoke) while listening to the jukebox playing classic rock songs from the 60′s and 70′s. Address: Rua D. Pedro V N89-91, Príncipe Real, Telephone (+351) 21 342 4729 - Open Monday-Sat 6pm/2 am / Sundays from 9pm to 2am & Buzzing since 1986....

CLIP OF THE DAY: SP Check-in

NEW IN TOWN: Skye Bar on the rooftop of Unique Hotel in Sao Paulo has just launched a new drink Wasabi Kin Skye (premium vodka, lemonade and wasabi), if you are around, worth trying out something new to warm up your winter nights.  RUN BEFORE ITS GOES: September is officially your last oportunity to check out Portinari's exhibition (14th July-18th Sept) No Ateliê de Portinari at the MAM (Museum of Modern Art). LAZZY SUNDAY: Every Sunday from 11h am to 5hpm, Bar Volt now offers a suberb brunch (intrigued to go there...). BEST FOR LAST: My dear pal Bruno Dias, (a.k.a. king of SP party happening & nightlife) opened his newest venture Seu Miagui bar in Itaim Bibi, a totally new concept that for the very first time is making you think twice before saying sushi dinner has to be formal....Seu Miagui Bar, Japonese finnest food meets chilled out "boteco" (a brazilian version of pub/ local bar) where SP hot models, entrepreneurs, curious residents, Dj's, cariocas and sushi lovers happily mingle while sipping beer and nibbling small portions of fried yakisoba.

CLIP-IT: more to come on Bruno Dias's Seu Miagui Bar....

CLIP OF THE DAY: Silence is golden

Yesterday night I bumped into a friend of mine who just told me she is moving to Paris at the end of the month, she also let me know that she is an avid reader of Clip everyday....so evidently today I'm dedicating it to her! Only a few days ago, Paris got another indigo blue paper clip of mine for their new Parisian member's club Silencio - (I found out while reading an article at "The Guardian," a  tip by a quite bohemian French friend and an entire page featured on "Departure Info" page 141 of this month's Wallpaper magazine). Where to start....? Its not even open yet! (Sorry Clippers, we are all going to have to wait until September) but in the mean time acclaimed director and Silencio designer David Lynch makes sure that he keeps us all at the tip of our toes by giving some of its main features away. Created by Enia Architectes, Silencio, a private member's club will be paying tribute to the arts - with a house bar, restaurant, library and cinema screening independent films and a stage for private performances. Finally and as far as "silence" goes....well owner Arnaud Frisch is convinently enough also the man behind a record label and Social Club (a Parisian music venue) so that means DJ Olivier Pilz of Phunk selecting the music himself. Lights? Think Thierry Dreyfus. Not bad for this year's rentreé Rue Montmartre....Can't wait.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Food for thought

According to Harry's Bar present owner Arrigo Cipriani, Carpaccio was created there in 1950 for the first time when Contess Amalia Noni Mocenigo ordered a raw meat dish which was recomended by her doctor. Atending her request, the waiter prepared thin slices of raw beef served with mustard sauce. The soon to be worldly famous dish was baptized Carpaccio, by Giuseppe Cipriani (Harry's bar owner at the time) as a tribute to Venetian painter Vittore Carpaccio, since the artist palete resembled the colours of their new dish. But that's not all Harry's Bar is known for, as many of you might know  Bellini drink was also created there and no one knows how to prepare it like they do as they serve it with natural peach juice insted of bottled juice. All trivia aside, if you are planning a trip to Venice make sure to Clip "Cantina do Mori " in mind  - a typical and charming Osteria close to Rialto market, San Polo 429.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Rio Review

My sincere appologies for not Clipping yesterday, (wasn't expecting e-mails from you asking about it)! Very glad, nevertheless. Between landing from Brazil and trying to recover from a flu and a temperature, my computer was off limits and so were my notes & paperclips. As I'm back on track today and as per promissed I'm sharing the latest from my trip and what's new in town!
Straight from Rio de Janeiro:

*Meza Bar cool owner, (friend of friends of mine) Fábio Battistella just opened his newest project: DOIZ, my favorite discovery while in Rio this week! More like a club rather than a bar, Doiz has quickly become Carioca's favorite hot spot to lounge around at night this South American winter.

*One of Rio de Janeiro's most prestigious and busy streets: Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon just welcomed yet another great bar Q. Fun, elegant and simple, the same owners of popular Quadrucci, Q gastrobar  opened less than two months ago but make sure to call before as their recipe for sucess is proving to be very effective!

CLIP -IT: Q-Eat: Mix de Boteco, Salmon Roll with Wasabi spawn & frozen Vodka. Q-Drink: Aperol.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Paris on my mind...

There is a very smart quote in Portuguese that says: "Don't ask a question if you are not prepared for the answer". That was exactly my thought today, when I texted a very good friend of mine asking where was she....her answer: "having drinks with Charlotte, Marion and Laurent at Ritz Terrasse Bar... you?". Well...not that I can complaint: I'm in Rio; although working now and as far from the possibility of crossing the street (for a much desired swim at Ipanema beach) as I am from the legendary Paris palace and my new favorite outdoor summertime party venue.

Boarding to Paris anytime soon? Ritz Terrasse Bar is open every day (since the 27th of May, this year) and throughout summer from 6pm - 2am. The chic outdoor setting adjacent to the classic L'Espardon restaurant (pictured above) is the place to see and be seen at night - where hypes, habitues and aristocrats naturally mingle while sipping French finest Champagne seating under a canopy of leaves, surrounded by unmistakably Parisian architecture, whilst listening to the latest electronic tunes played by some of the world's best DJ's. Ahhhh...Paris, Paris...no need to place a CLIP at the obvious - meet me there at the end of this summer?

CLIP OF THE DAY: Do you have tickets?

GREAT NEWS! there is life in the absence of ElBulli after all Clippers...

After working with tapas in ElBulli (officially closed yesterday for 3 years for molecular research and the creation of its own foundation) the owner for the world's most celebrated restaurant Ferran Adrià  teamed up with his brother Albert and decided to develop a global concept which links gastronomy to a way of understanding life. "An amusing way of eating that turns the eater into an interpreter of a theatre play, of a chorus magazine, of a circus variety, being the character of a fairy play. It is a staging of real life". Tickets Tapas bar consists in different areas and they all need reservations (think a 3 month waiting list currently). As if it wasn't hard enough to get in, the two Spanish Brothers also involved Iglesias’ brothers, Juan Carlos, Borja and Pedro to help create what's now considered the coolest place to eat Tapas ever. As you walk in the first area called La Presumida you will enjoy the true reflection of Mediterranean food, followed by La Estrela bar (the meeting point bar), next to Camarote de los Marx in the local entrance, where  clients who enter the place are welcomed in a rather theatrical and original way. Adjacent to Tickets there is 41 a cocktail and molecular snack's bar, where you will meet "Rafa" a discreet and cordial southern man who is en charged of this season's (and more to come) hottest entrance door....Start thinking CONNECT and working your charm....because if you don't have "tickets" you are not going anywhere around here. CLIP-IT in mind next time you are coming to Spain! I most definitely have and can't wait for a second molecular experience!

CLIP OF THE DAY: Chill Brazil

When in Rio, act like a Carioca meaning that you should find a hype place to chill out and hang with friends. Ideally this should involve a nice environment and quaint setting. I´m giving you all a helping hand where you can find me tracing around town in my havaianas and lightweight dresses.

For relaxing, spending time with friends from out of town and great Amazon food: Palaphitas

For good wine and yummy nibilings: Venga!

For a bohemian night out: Bar do Horto

CLIP-IT: This is my favorite bar, old school and where all Cariocas meet after work: JOBI. Fun fun fun and not enough clips in the world to express how simple and cool this place is....

CLIP OF THE DAY: T-time

Do people really change....?

I'm not sure about that, but they certainly adapt. I know I have (in so many levels).
Take tea for example: I used to hate it as a kid, but after 8 years living in London I gave in....and today you will find me drinking it out of my free will. Now, for the people who know me personally, they most probably heard me telling the "tea story" (if so, I was either trying to impress you or bored....) Whatever the reason was, its because I've heard it myself a 1.000 times, thanks to my father who has no memory record what so ever and insisted on telling me this story as if it was the very first time.  Well, since a very early age in my life, I always felt this urge of "sharing is caring" and so I thought you should all know it too so in some way I could feel less idiotic. Time has gone by and today I have my own blog and accoding to stats over 400 viewers a day - (great opportunity to tell my "tea story").

Sorry Clippers, but here it goes: Tea was actually imported to Europe during the Portuguese expansion of the 16th century, at which time it was termed chá (and this is still how we say it in Portuguese). In 1750, tea experts traveled from China to the Azores Islands and planted tea, along with jasmines to give the tea aroma and distinction.  Portuguese Princess Catherine of Bragança, wife of Charles II, took the tea habit to Great Britain around 1660 and by the turn of the 19th century tea became as widely consumed as it is today in Britain and around the world.

My favorite part: Why everywhere else in the world (except China and Portugal) we call it Tea, Thé, etc...?? Because when tea was beeing imported to Europe, it was placed into big brown bags where a large letter "T" was stamped outside that stood for "Traffic". There you go, something to "CLIP" it in mind next time you are trying to pretend you are cultured on a date or bored at a cocktail party.

CLIP-IT: Brazil's first true and new Tea Gourmet Store, located in the bohemian district of Vila Madalena in Sao Paulo. This really cool tea room is the brainchild of local architects Alan Chu and Cristiano Kato, who transformed a small house into a concept store inspired by little tins of the 35 blends offered by “the gourmet tea”.  Also check out their website for all sorts of crazy tea utensils and trendy tea gifts.

CLIP OF THE DAY: Sunday Society

Sundays at the Westbourne Pub Appreciation Society*

Regardles of where you are in the world there is something about Sundays and a sense of purpose or rather lack of ....Is it really the end of the weekend or the start of a new week? Should we organise our wardrobes, catch up on our paperwork, visit our family or take the most of our free time and hang out with our friends? Whatever that is, all the people that I have ever crossed paths with on this earth had those thoughts and we laughed about it together over how "depressing Sundays are" or how "thank GOD its Sunday today" ...! As a result of so many of these moments something called: Sundays at the Westbourne Pub Apppreciation Society was born. Founded by my friend and Parisian bon vivant Alex Zaluski, the SWPA Society was a sort of code club for those who just liked to lay low on Sundays, enjoyed a home meal without having to cook it, drank good beer surrounded by their friends and good looking people. Yes, good looking people accidently became part of the equation and what started of as just a group of friends who shared commun interests became a social statement in London and we set a trend.  In 2008 British newspaper Observer said "The place looks more like a home than a pub… and all the little details bring the place to life. It really is a social meeting place".

COMMON CONNECTION
How I met Alex Zaluski? On a Sunday afternoon at The Westbourne (where else...)? After winning a bet set by a friend of mine, in which the prize was a dinner for 2 anywhere I wanted in London. The bet? Silly as can be when in the presence of wine & friends: I had go to his table at take his hat off, more like win his atention (oh well...British Pub behaviour) while he was happily chating away surrounded by Camern Electras (like he nicknamed them). His fairplay when I did so and sense of humor was the common glue that hold us together and we became friends since that day. Alex is to me a true character: fun, generous, smart, hardworking, worldly (2 years ago he droped his job as a banker and went travelling around the world). He is also ridiculously charming and so good looking that he should pay more taxes to the French Government. Few weeks later after winning my Sunday bet and a new friend, I was invited by Alex to be part of the Westbourne pub appreciation Society, and later on I was appointed Portuguese/Brazilian Ambassador & PR by the board. The rest is history... So you are in the know, SWPA Society members included business men Paul Miliotis and Raphael Levy, Burberry PR and loving friend Rafaela Feio, it carioca girl Betina de Luca, talented artist Rose Klabin and Alexia Niedzielski (featured on Vanity Fair 09 and Charlotte Casiraghi's collaborator on the Loro-Piana funded project).

What we eat*
Starter - Half a Dozen Maldon Rock Oysters with Bloody Mary Salsa and Lemon
Main - Roast Cornfed Chicken Breast with Butterbeans, Fennel, Chorizo & Aioli

What we drink*
Pimms English-style: gin, carbonated lemonade with apple, cucumber and orange.
Pint of Kronenbourg 1664 beer
